Maine Learning Results: Mathematics- D. Algebra
Functions and Relations
Grade 9-Diploma
4. Students understand and interpret the characteristics of functions using graphs, tables, and algebraic techniques.
c. Use concepts such as domain, range, zeros, intercepts, and maximum and minimum values.

Rational: Today in class we will consider how graphs are used in the real world and expand on the terminology learned in previous classes.

Assessment

Formative (Assessment for Learning)
During this class I will have students work on idea wheels to brainstorm different ways that graphs are used in the real world. These wheels will be discussed as a class and other students will get a chance to expand on the ideas poised by one student. They will also have homework to go over and pass in. The homework will be over the topics covered in classes before and any topic that a student finds unclear will be gone over again.
Summative (Assessment of Learning)
During this class the students will take a quiz over the basic functions. The questions will be the same as the quiz taken the previous day except the multiple choice questions will be rearranged. This quiz will count toward their final grade.

Integration

Technology: During this class the students will use the class wiki and TI-83 calculators. The calculators will be used to graph different equations quickly and let the students make multiple graphs on the same graphing screen to compare them. The students will also use computers to look up different jobs that use graphs.
Social Studies/Business: This class will use business because it will look at how graphs are used in the real world and we will discuss the stock market. The links will be made about how graphs are used in the real world and the business world.

Groupings

The students are going to get into small groups and brainstorm ways that graphs are used in the real world. They will fill out an idea wheel and then discuss the ideas in a round robin fashion in their groups. The groups that they use will be the same groups as the stock market project and if they are to finish before the rest of the class they can work on getting ready to present and collect their data.

Differentiated Instruction

Strategies
Verbal: There is going to be a class discussion and group discussions on how graphs are used in the business world.
Logical: In this lesson the students are going to have to use mathematical reasoning to back up their ideas and choices. They are going to have to link math to the real world.
Visual: In the lesson the students will make idea wheels where they can draw pictures or write ideas down.
Intrapersonal: At the beginning of the class they are going to work independently for a little bit on brainstorming different ways graphs and charts are used in everyday life.
Interpersonal: The round robin activity will be interpersonal. During this time they will be able to share the ideas that they brainstormed and hear new ideas.
Physical: During the group work they will have to get up and move into their groups.
Modifications/Accommodations
I will review student's IEP, 504 or ELLIDEP and make appropriate modifications and accommodations.
If you miss a class then you are to check the class folder located next to my desk for papers that you may have missed. You can talk to me, or your fellow peers, to get the assignments and I would be more than glad to share with you any notes for the class missed. Any assignment given on a day you are absent will have the due date pushed back for you and the amount of time you will be given will depend on the assignment.
Extensions
During this class the students will be using graphing calculators and the internet. The calculators will be used to compare graphs and to reinforce the previous lessons. The internet will be used to find jobs that use graphs and equations. It is expected that the students will find jobs such as stock brokers and similar jobs.

Maine Standards for Initial Teacher Certification and Rationale

Standard 3 - Demonstrates a knowledge of the diverse ways in which students learn and develop by providing learning opportunities that support their intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and cultural development.
Rationale: This lesson will allow students to present information that they discovered and they will have a chance to question what they have learned and make a decision pertaining to the stock market. The students will also get a chance to link mathematics and graphs to everyday life and see how useful graphs and charts are. During this lesson the students will be asked to reflect on their lives and make connections to what we are covering in class.
Standard 4 - Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, curriculum goals, and learning and development theory.
Rationale: This lesson will show a planned instruction based on knowledge because the class will have a chance to discuss graphs and charts and how they are used by businesses and how they are used in everyday life. This lesson will have students giving presentations and discussing graphs and visuals as well as contemplating by themselves about graphs.
Standard 5 - Understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies and appropriate technology to meet students’ needs.
Rationale: This lesson will incorporate the SmartBoard and students will have to use the class wiki to access information. The students will have to call up graphs and charts using the SmartBoard and then discuss them as well as answer questions that other classmates posed. During this class the students will have chances to get up and move around, meet in groups, work alone, and answer mathematical questions verbally. In doing this many of the intelligences are covered.
Standard 8 - Understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and support the development of the learner.
Rationale: At the beginning of the class the homework will be collected and gone over. This will give the students feedback on the knowledge gone over last class. Next students will get an idea wheel to fill out with different ways they see graphs and charts being used in everyday life. These wheel will be discussed with the entire class to help students hear multiple ways of using graphs and charts. Finally the students are going to be giving presentations that they have been working on at home and at school. These presentations will be graded according to the rubric and feedback will be given at the end of each presentation.

Teaching and Learning Sequence:

When the students enter the room the desks will be set up in the normal groups of four. The students are to sit with the group with which they will be presenting.

When the students get to class they will have the time just before class to work on their presentations. When class starts they are going to be shown a comic from xkcd that deals with graphs and charts being used in the real world. After the comic the class is going to go over the homework from last class. The students can ask any question that they want to over the homework and when there are no more questions the homework will be collected and graded. While the homework is being gone over the students should have out graphing calculators and be following along with the teacher with the solutions to the problems. (20 minutes) What, Where, Why, Hook Tailor: Interpersonal, Logical, Intrapersonal
After going over the homework the class is going to get idea wheels to work on (see attached idea wheel). The students are to work alone on these to come up with ideas of how graphs and charts are used in the real world. During this time they may use computers to search on the internet for jobs that use graphs. After working alone for ten minutes or so the teacher will have the students discuss the ideas that the students came up with in their small groups. They are to do this in a round robin manner where one person will start and then the person to their left will go next and so forth until everyone has shared all their ideas. During this time the students should feel free to extrapolate upon other students ideas. They should discuss these ideas for about 15 minutes in their groups and then the teacher will open up the discussion to the whole class. During the whole class discussion the teacher can open up a blank page on the SmartBoard and have students come up and write their ideas on the board. This page can later be linked to the class wiki. (40 minutes) Equip, Explore, Tailor: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Logical, Verbal, Visual, Kinesthetic
The last part of class will be devoted to working on group presentations and asking any clarifying questions about the test that will be taken next class. After the idea wheels are done the teacher will pass out the quiz (see attached quiz) and the students will have some time to finish them. When everyone is done the quizzes will be switched with a partner and graded in class. After they are graded they will be passed in to the teacher. After everyone has finished the quiz the teacher will open up to floor to any questions about the test. When there are no more questions the teacher will allow the students to work on their presentations. At this time the teacher should remind the students that they are to also write a one page (double spaced) essay on whether they think investing in the stock market is a good idea or not. This essay will be due on the day of presenting. (20 minutes) Explore, Experience, Rethink, Revise Tailor: Interpersonal, Visual, Logical, Kinesthetic, Verbal
The beginning of class will be devoted to going over and correcting homework. This will give the students a chance to see what they know and to find out if they need any extra help in any area. The homework will be graded and will go towards the homework grade. Next the students will be filling out an idea wheel. This wheel will be discussed as a class and graded as a participation grade. The final part of class will be taking a quiz and answering questions on the test that will be given next class. The quizzes will be graded during class to give the students timely feedback and then they will have a chance to ask any question they want about the test.
